Mr. Charles Albert Dickerson, 86, of Lebanon, died Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation at Parkwood, Lebanon.
Charles was born June 11, 1926, in Yountsville, southwest of Crawfordsville, the son of the now late Ellis Paul and Florence Juanita (Weir) Dickerson.
He was raised in the Crawfordsville area, and was a 1944 graduate of New Ross High School. In 1946, Charles joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, and served his country honorably. Following World War II he went to Japan, where he was a special agent in the Army of Occupation.
Charles married Anita Ellen Emmert on Sept. 14, 1946, in Baltimore, Md. She passed away on Jan. 12, 1998. Charles then married Rita June (Lindsey) Dennis on Oct. 4, 2003, at the New Brunswick Church of Christ. She passed away on Nov. 12, 2010.
He lived in Mechanicsburg until 1974, when he moved to Thorntown. After his marriage to Rita in 2003, he moved to Milledgeville.
Charles was a self-employed lime truck driver from 1947 to 1951. For 31 years, he worked as an inspector of aircraft engines for Detroit Diesel-Allison Division of General Motors, retiring in 1982.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved to travel, and he took great pleasure in taking pictures. He was a former golfer, and in his spare time he enjoyed woodworking and crossword puzzles.
Charles was a member of the New Brunswick Church of Christ.
Survivors include two sons, C. Edward (Marcia) Dickerson of Lebanon and Mark A. (Angela) Dickerson of Monon; stepchildren, Allen (Carolyn) Norris of New Ross, Evelyn (Herman) Hatcher of Indianapolis, Bobby Lee (Nancy) Dennis of Cloverdale, Joyce (James) Jenkins of Dayton, Tenn., Bernice (Harvey) Cunningham of Angola, Darlene (Raymond) Carter of Millington, Tenn., Louise Brock of Camby, The Rev. Timothy Lee (Suzanne) Dennis of White Mills, Ky., David C. (LuAnne) Dennis of Angola and Doug (Diana) Dennis of Lizton; four grandchildren, Kevin Dickerson of Colorado, Kimberly Lynn Dickerson of Indianapolis, Brandy Marie Hunt of Nebraska and Brooke Nichol Curry of North Carolina; five great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kaye Ann Dickerson.
Visitation is 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 5, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Jim Coyle officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown.
