Harold B. Acton, 77, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.
Harold was the fourth child born in Harrison Township to Victor Bruer Acton and Mae F. Peabody Acton on July 1, 1935. He was raised on the family farm, where he learned to respect the land and all its creatures.
He graduated from Pinnell High School in 1953. He was a member of the Pinnell Purple Dragon basketball team, and his love of athletics was passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Harold and Norma Jean Acton were married on Nov. 7, 1954, in Dover. Throughout their 59 years of marriage, Jean was his best friend. They are the parents of Charlotte, wife of Kent Frandsen, and Ken, husband of Paula Buntin Acton.
Harold was first employed by Martin Gas Company and then Leland Smith Construction. It was while he was working with Smith Construction that Lebanon’s first subdivision was built — Northfield Village. In 1963, Harold formed his own company, Acton Building Company, of which he was still actively working at the time of his death. Acton Building Company has built and remodeled many fine homes in Boone County and central Indiana. Harold was honored to have his son join the company and work by his side for the last 35 years.
He was a member and decon at Central Christian Church in Lebanon, and a member of the Lebanon Elks Club.
He also was instrumental, through his JayCee ties, in building shelter houses for Abner Longley Park and by the tennis courts in Lebanon Memorial Park, both of which are still used today. He and Jerry Kerr laughingly thought they built more Psi Ote floats than the members. Over the years, he built more homecoming and Fourth of July floats, musical/play props and post prom walk-ins than he could count.
Although he was proud of his children and their spouses, his true twinkle came with the birth of his grandchildren. From the moment they were born, he was their biggest supporter. It didn’t matter whether it was T-ball, three-hole golf, Little League, youth football, middle- or high-school basketball, football, golf, through to college football and golf, he was there. He was happiest whether on the sideline, court side or walking the course, and was always planning for the next match or game — rain, shine or snow.
Harold is survived by his wife, children and their spouses; as well as granddaughter, Anna Alicia Frandsen of Dayton, Ohio, grandsons, Aaron B. Acton of Indianapolis, Andrew K. Frandsen of Indianapolis, and Evan K. Acton of North Canton, Ohio; his sister, Irene F. Urban of Lebanon; and his brothers, Charles, Dover and James, all of Lebanon. He was a special uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Roland.
Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 15, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Community Foundation of Boone County or the Boone County 4-H Foundation.
