Richard D. “Dick” Copeland, 79, of Wilson, Mich., formerly of Thorntown, passed away Saturday March 9, 2013, at Florida Hospital Heartland Division in Sebring, Fla.
Dick was born Aug. 8, 1933, in Thorntown, the son of the now late Millard and Mary (Johnson-Roberts) Copeland.
On May 27, 1955, he married the former Marilyn McDaniel at Pleasant View Methodist Church in Indiana.
Dick was a special education teacher for over 34 years. He also owned and operated Cedarview Adult Foster Care for over 16 years, retiring in 1988. He enjoyed watching IU Basketball and being in the outdoors in general, especially the peace and tranquility of the property along the river, that he shared with his wife for the past 30 years.
He is survived by his four children, Randal (Kathleen) Copeland, Daniel (Laura) Copeland, Sandra (Bruce) Copeland and Elizabeth (Fred) Grenier; two brothers, James (Martha) Copeland and Carter (Esther) Copeland; one sister, Joan (Rick) Culley; 10 grandchildren, Erin Copeland, Eileen (Tom) Roddy, Kelly (Jason) Pivatto, Matthew Copeland, Emily Copeland, Cassaundra Copeland, Andrew Frievalt, and Adeline, Aletha and Amelia St. Aubin; one great-granddaughter, Annabelle Hallfrisch; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2011; and his twin brother, Don Copeland.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. (CST) Tuesday, March 19, at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home, W. 3755 U.S. 2, Spalding, Mich. 49886. Tony Revord American Legion Post #244 Rites will take place at 4:45 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Richard Copeland will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. James Copeland officiating. Burial will take place in the Spalding Township Cemetery in the spring.
