Mr. James D. “Denny” Duke, 74, Avon, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Mr. Duke, was born in Indianapolis on Oct. 24, 1938, the son of the now late Harlan Albert and Evelyn Deloris (Shroyer) Duke.
Reared and educated in Indianapolis, he attended Ben Davis High School. During 1962, Denny enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees before his honorable discharge in 1964.
On Nov. 11, 1961, he was married to Dixie Avonelle (Miller) Duke. Dixie died Feb. 19, 1994. He was married to Linda Marie (Endres) Duke on Feb. 10, 2002. Mrs. Duke survives.
In 1957, Denny apprenticed and became a member of Carpenters Local No. 60. He was the owner of JUD construction in Avon from 1977-1997.
A dedicated father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he loved spending time with his family. Denny enjoyed fishing, carpentry, old movies, talking politics, and his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Pike Township Lions Club.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Linda M. Duke of Avon, include three sons, Jimmy Duke and wife, Teresa, and Jon Duke and wife, Andrea, both of Danville, and Jered Duke and wife, Laura, of Greenwood; seven grandchildren, Brandon Duke, Jeremy Duke (wife Holly), Jacob Duke, Olivia Duke, Christopher Duke, Cameron Duke and Connor Duke; a great-grandson, Jackson Duke, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, Dixie, Denny was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Natalie; a sister, Carol; and three brothers, Kent, Richard, and Charles.
Visitation is planned for 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Myers Chapel of Memories, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. The family will also greet friends at the funeral home one hour prior the funeral.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the funeral home, with Pastor Steve Reeves, officiating.
Interment with military rites will follow at the Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.
