Mr. Meredith J. Merrill

Indianapolis

1922-2010

Meredith James Merrill, 87, of Indianapolis, formerly of Boone County and Lebanon, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at Brookdale Place at Fall Creek in Indianapolis.

Mr. Merrill was born in Clinton County one mile north of Kirklin, Indiana, on June 19, 1922. He was the son of Artie O. and Mary (Kingsolver) Merrill; they preceded him in death.

Mr. Merrill moved from Clinton to Boone County at an early age and graduated of Kirklin High School in 1941. He started farming with his father as he completed high school and continued farming until his retirement in 1988. In addition, he operated the Merrill Insurance Agency 1960-1983.

He was married to Mary Margaret (Louks) Merrill on Dec. 16, 1945, in Kirklin. She survives. The couple spent most of their married years in Clinton Township and moved to Lebanon in 1989.

Family was important to him as well as church and his work.

He was an active member of the First Community Church in Lebanon from 1962 to 2002. Until 1989, he served as a member of the Clinton Township Advisory Board for a total of 18 years. For nine years, he was also a member of the Boone County Soil and Water Conservation Board.

Other survivors include two children, Mr. David L. (wife Nancy) Merrill of Cleveland and Mrs. Donna K. (husband John) Shank of Indianapolis; four grandchildren John B. Shank, III of Carmel, Robert E. Shank of Noblesville, Debra A. Lawrence of Noblesville, Christina Mars of Cleveland; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Zela Davis and Anna Kathryn “Katie” Gilbert, and a brother, Vernon Merrill.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., in Lebanon. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Myers; the Rev. Paul Shikany officiating. Interment will follow at Green Lawn Cemetery in Frankfort.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.
