Richard Gene Bailey

Mr. Richard Gene Bailey, 83, of Lebanon, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon.

Mr. Bailey was born Dec. 1, 1929, in Lebanon. He was the son of the late Clarence Edgar and Ruby (Woodard) Bailey. A lifelong resident of Lebanon, he was reared and educated in Lebanon, where he graduated from Lebanon High School.

He married Myrtle L. Philbeck on Dec. 15, 1972, in Lafayette. Mrs. Bailey survives.

Mr. Bailey was a longtime employee of Commercial Filters, continuing to work there as the operation was acquired by Parker Hannifin Corporation. He retired in 1991. For 25 years, he and his wife operated the concession stand for Summerville Acton and Douglas Auctioneers.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he enjoyed his family. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed cheering for Dale Earnhardt Sr. In addition, for the past 35 years he was very supportive of his wife’s longtime passionate project, The Boone County Toy Drive.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle L. Bailey of Lebanon; five children, Janet Smith of Lebanon, David (Sharon) Bailey-Hunt of Lapel, Melvin (Debbie) Bailey of Lebanon, Morris Bailey of Thorntown and Kathy Shipley of Ocala, Fla.; two brothers, Lawrence Bailey of Georgia and Lowell Bailey of Pittsboro; one sister, Marilyn (Myron) Mitchell of Pittsboro; and several grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth Bailey, Walter Bailey and Robert Bailey.

A Private graveside service is planned for Saturday, Dec. 22, at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Boone County.
