James Thomas Whitehead

James Thomas Whitehead, 77, of Thorntown, Indiana, died January 22, 2013, in Naples, Florida.

Born in Shelbyville on April 1, 1935, James was the son of Wilbur William and Martha Jane (Thomas) Whitehead.

Mr. Whitehead graduated from Lebanon High School in 1953. He studied agriculture at Purdue University and graduated in 1958. A member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Purdue, James was also a member of the ROTC program and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army upon graduation.

On Aug. 17, 1957, he was married to Margaret Parr Davis in Lebanon. Mrs. Whitehead survives.

He served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, where he was awarded the United States Army Commendation Medal for superior leadership. Following his military service, he worked for Elanco, a division of Eli Lilly and Company, from 1961 to 1991, where he held various management positions in Peoria, Illinois; Omaha, Nebraska; Fresno, Calif.; and Indianapolis.

Mr. Whitehead was a member of the Ulen Country Club and the John Purdue Club. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, and their four children: Ellen D. Reising (and her husband Stephen and their children Alicia and Mary Martha); James Thomas Jr. (J.T.) Whitehead (and his wife Julia and their children Daniel and Joseph); Mary Parr Kessler (and her husband Craig and their children Adam, Davis, Alex, and Julia); and William Caleb Whitehead (and his wife Julie and their children Ally and Caroline). Whitehead is also survived by his sister Nina Dellinger and her children Andrea Winegardner and Dow Dellinger.

Private family funeral services will be held at Powell Chapel on the grounds of Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.

Visitation is planned for Thursday, Jan. 31, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon St., in Lebanon.
