Ernest Calvin “Skip” Fairfield

Ernest Calvin “Skip” Fairfield, 65, of Hemet, Calif., formerly of Thorntown, passed away Nov. 15, 2009, doing what he truly loved, playing golf.

Skip, as he was affectionately known, was born June 29, 1944, in Thorntown, to Ernest Webster and Sarah Catherine (Riley) Fairfield. His parents are deceased.

On March 25, 1977, he married Becky Davidson Fairfield. Theirs was a loving union that lasted over 32 years.

Skip attended Thorntown Elementary School, graduated from Thorntown High School with the class of 1963, and earned a master’s degree in road engineering from Purdue University. He worked with the Oscar Wyrick Trucking Company, Schneider Transfer and the Boone County Highway Department as a supervisor, retiring in 2007 after many years of loyal and dedicated service.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing. After moving to Hemet, he took up golf. When he wasn’t golfing, Skip worked with Securitas as a security guard in San Jacinto, Calif., at a Walmart facility.

Skip was known for being a good person and a friend to many. He was proud to be a part of his community, especially his neighborhood. He served as 2nd vice president of the REC board for the Hemet West Community, and was recently elected president.

He was a member of the Thorntown Lions Club and attended the Thorntown Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Debbie (Kevin) Smith of Thorntown; brother, Jerry Fairfield of Thorntown; grandchildren, Jeff, Jessie and Josie Smith, all of Danville; and the mother of his children, Mary Ilene Vaught Fairfield of Thorntown.

Skip was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Allen Fairfield, and a sister, Emma Lou Shelley.

A celebration of Skip’s life will be 7 p.m. Monday at Centenary United Methodist Church, 910 Fordice Road, Lebanon, with the Rev. Raymond Duff officiating.

Memorial contributions and love offerings may be made in honor of Skip’s memory, to the Fairfield Family at the church or c/o the mortuary.

Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon.
