Major Howard Adron Davis

Major Howard Adron Davis, 77, Colfax, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at 6:12 p.m. in Boone County.                       

Mr. Davis was born in Thorntown on March 15, 1932. He was the son of the late Barton Benson and Ruth (Clouser) Davis.

Mr. Davis was married to Sylvia Lorraine (Sauter) Davis in Fayetteville, N.C. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Dec. 31, 1955.

With the exception of the time he spent in the United States Air Force, Mr. Davis was a Boone County resident. He was a 1950 graduate of Thorntown High School.

He was a highly decorated reconnaissance pilot having spent a career in the Air Force during the period Dec. 5, 1950, to retirement on Jan. 1, 1971. He received numerous citations and decorations for his missions in Vietnam. He returned to Boone County where he was a postal worker in Lebanon.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he enjoyed his family and their activities. He liked the out-of-doors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and flying. In addition, he liked to garden, read and followed politics. He was an avid sports fan and followed the Indiana University basketball team and the Notre Dame Football program.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Frankfort, the V.F.W. in Lebanon, and the American Legion in Colfax.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Sylvia S. Davis of Colfax; five children, Bishop Craig M. Davis and wife, Pamela, of Hagerstown, Mr. Brook N. Davis of Colfax, Ms. Marcie A. Davis of Lebanon, Mr. Dean A. Davis of Mishawaka and Ms. Shari L. Klink of Lebanon; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Pauline Davis of Thorntown, Mrs. Jean Davis of Lafayette and Mrs. Jacqueline Davis of Lebanon, and five grandchilren, Joshua L. M. Davis of Hagerstown, Valarie J. Davis of Lebanon, Adrian A. Davis-Sample of Lebanon, Noah D. Klink of Lebanon and Alexis M. Klink of Lebanon.

Three brothers, Richard A. Davis, Truman E. Davis and John B. Davis, are deceased.

Visitation is planned for 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. The rosary will be recited Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Father Christopher Miller officiating.

Interment will follow military rites at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Frankfort or to the Active Duty Veterans Support Group of the donor’s choice.
