William T. “Tommie” Bowles Sr.

Thorntown

1935-2012

William Tommie Bowles Sr., 76, of Thorntown, formerly of Lebanon, died Jan. 29, 2012, at home in Lebanon.

Tommie was born in Summer Shade, Ky., on Feb. 26, 1935. He was the son of the now late William Troy and Maudie Gladys (Taylor) Bowles.

On Jan. 23, 1960, in Lebanon, he was married to Velva Pauline Bushong. Mrs. Bowles passed away on July 3, 1997.

Tommie was reared and educated in Summer Shade. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957, aboard the U.S.S. Casson Young.

As a welder, Tommie worked for several employers. He spent many years at Commercial Filters Corporation in Lebanon, continuing as it changed owners to Carborundum and Parker-Hanafin Corporation. He retired from there in 1998.

For the past 12 years, Tommie and Alice M. Lister had been companions. They spent six months each year in Thorntown and six months in their home in Sebring, Fla., where they enjoyed various activities. Known as both “William” and “Tommie,” he had enjoyed various activities and liked to join in the fun while in Florida. He participated in swimming, shuffleboard, fishing and Bocce Ball. He was a devoted husband and mate, as well as a dedicated father and grandfather. He liked fishing and gardening, and liked to take casual drives to explore various interesting areas and to reminisce.

Tommie was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Lebanon and the County Line Fishing Club in northern Boone County.

Survivors include children, Paula D. Nelson and William T. “Chip” Bowles Jr., both of Lebanon; companion Alice M. Lister of Thorntown; stepchildren, Judy (Steve) Davis of Thorntown, Marlene (Don) Ely of Mulberry and Eugene (Terri) Campbell of Hot Springs, Ark.; brother, Sherman Bowles of Summer Shade; sister, Martha Tudor of Summer Shade; two grandsons, Harry C. Nelson IV and Joseph T. Bowles, both of Lebanon; and 13 stepgrandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Harrison Bowles, Kenneth Bowles and Joseph Bowles.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Eagles rites will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Myers Chapel of Memories, the Rev. Don Ely officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Bowles name to a charity of the donor’s choice.
