Mr. Earl J. “Skeet” Heick, 77, of Lebanon, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon.
Mr. Heick, was born May 10, 1935, in Lafayette, to the now late Kenneth Franklin Smith and Mary Elizabeth (Bumbleburg) Heick-Smith.
He attended schools in Lafayette, and graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1953. He enlisted in the United States Marines and served his country honorably.
He married Nancy Carrol Steill on June 14, 1958, in Lafayette. Mrs. Heick passed away on April 29, 2012.
Following his service in the military, Mr. Heick worked for Sherwin Williams in Lafayette. Beginning in 1959, he worked at the Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance office in Lebanon, retiring after 37 years.
A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend, Mr. Heick loved his children and grandchildren dearly, and enjoyed attending their events. His hobbies included cooking, bowling, camping, hunting, fishing, making his own fishing lures and repairing fishing poles.
He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lebanon, where, for several years, he served as an usher and attendant for the church bingo. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Lebanon Elks Lodge.
Survivors include three children, Curt (Kelli) Heick of Lebanon, Marty (Jill) Heick of Decatur, Ill., and Kathy (Bud) Gunter of Fishers; grandchildren, Kaitlin E. Heick and Kristin A. Heick, both of Lebanon, and Andrew C. Heick and Tanner J. Heick, both of Decatur; two stepgrandchildren, Bradley A. Gunter of Camby and Ashley N. Lopresto of Noblesville; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Quinten L. Gunter of Camby and Nicholas J. Lopresto of Noblesville.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Nancy, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Heick, and a sister, Barbara Pauline Kauffman, and her husband, Jack Kauffman.
Visitation will be 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 4 p.m. Friday, prior to the visitation. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Myers Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. Timothy Kroeger officiating. Interment, with military rites, will follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Lebanon.
