Don K. Caplinger, 77, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013.
He was born on June 27, 1935, in Indianapolis, to Walter Alva and Lora Fern (Abbott) Caplinger. They moved to Lebanon when Don was a young child. He attended Lebanon schools, graduating from Lebanon High School in 1953.
Cappy attended Wabash College, graduating in 1957 with a degree in political science. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity serving as house president his senior year. He remained active, serving in several capacities for Wabash and his fraternity after graduation. Wabash and Delta Tau Delta were a very important part of his adult life.
Don lived in Indianapolis and worked his entire career for L.S. Ayres. Starting as a buyer for Ayres, he retired as vice president of consumer relations. He was also active in the Republican party in the ‘60s and ‘70s, serving as a precinct committeeman and city councilman.
After his retirement, he became very active in the Marion County Master Gardeners. He took great pleasure in planning and planting his garden. He treasured the friendships he formed with other gardeners. He was a gregarious person who formed many long and close relationships with people he came in contact with through school, work and his political ties. His jovial fun-loving nature will be missed by all of those who knew him.
Don is survived by a niece, Kathryn S. (David) Segal; and great-nieces, Karen Winefordner and Jennifer Hay of Columbus, Ohio. A nephew, Terry L. (Sue Ashmore) Brandenburg, DVM; a great-niece, Kathryn J. Brandenburg; a great-nephew, Brett W. Brandenburg; and brother-in-law, Lawrence E. Brandenburg, all of Lebanon, also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Judith A. Brandenburg.
Visitation is 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at Flanner and Buchanan-Zionsville Funeral Center, 105 W. Pine St., Zionsville. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral center, followed by a reception. Private burial will be on Friday, March 15, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lebanon.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wabash Alumni Foundation at 301 W Wabash Ave, Crawfordsville, IN 47933; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
