Hila Josephine Campbell, Lebanon, passed away Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at her home in Lebanon.
She will be greatly missed by her five children and their spouses, Patsy (David) Trisler of Chevy Chase, Md., Beverly Campbell of Bradenton, Fla., Karen (Chuck) Shepherd of Lebanon, Charles (Marla) Campbell of Lebanon and Georgetta Hinkle of Lebanon.
Other survivors include her 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren all in the Lebanon and Indianapolis areas.
She will also be missed by her sole living sister, Lela Land, and other family members in Kentucky.
Josephine, or “Jo” or “Jody” as some of her friends called her, was 89 years old. She suffered a massive stroke in 1992 but recovered miraculously from that and lived a very rich and full life surrounded by those who loved and cared for her deeply. In early 2008 she developed an autoimmune disease which dramatically impacted her health. She continued to enjoy her life and shared that joy and her strong faith with those around her. Her daughters, Georgetta and Karen and granddaughter Cassandra were her primary caretakers during this time. This allowed Josephine to remain in her home with family during the last two years.
Josephine Murphy was born on April 8, 1921, and raised in Casey County, Kentucky. She was one of 11 children born to the late William Henry and Zophie Emma Murphy. She worked in Cincinnati, Ohio, for a period of time before marrying George Denny Campbell, who preceded her in death. They moved to Lebanon for work around 1950 where they raised their family.
While Josephine was primarily a mother and manager of her home, she held various other jobs over the years. The outside job she enjoyed immensely and retired from was at the Lebanon Stokes Elementary School where she served lunch to the children. Josephine was an active participant of the Lebanon Wesleyan Church.
A viewing and celebration of her life will be held at the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon, from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10.
Her body will be laid to rest at the Green River Valley Church in Liberty, Kentucky on Saturday, Sept. 11, with visitation there from noon until the time of service at 2 p.m. in the McKinney-Brown Funeral Home, 752 Campbellsville Road, Liberty, Ky.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Josephine’s life can be summarized by the following: Her faith in God guided her life and the way she raised her children. Her quiet spirit, unceasing generosity, and love for others caused everyone to love her. This is why she was cherished and will be so missed.
