Litscher wins fellowship

Holland, Mich. — Robin Litscher of Lebanon is the recipient of a fellowship through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Litscher, who majored in philosophy and German at Hope College in Holland, Mich., will be teaching in Germany during her fellowship.

Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Grant recipients include recent college graduates and graduate students, college and university instructors, and professionals in other fields.

Behrens receives DePauw honors

Greencastle — Jennifer Behrens has been named to the dean’s list at DePauw University, Greencastle, for the 2009 spring semester. This is Behrens’ fourth consecutive semester of receiving the honor. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Behrens was also awarded the Wylie Condit Scholarship to assist promising sophomores or juniors to further their studies in biochemistry. The scholarship was awarded at the academic awards convocation at DePauw University in April. Jennifer is the daughter of David and Sally Behrens, Lebanon.

Taylor graduates with honors

Manchester — Cyndel Taylor of Advance, who graduated with cum laude honors with a degree in English with a journalism minor this past May, made the spring 2009 Dean’s list at Manchester College. Taylor is a graduate of Western Boone High School.

To receive this honor, a student must complete at least 12 hours with a GPA of 3.5 or above for the semester.

Cross named to dean’s list

Huntington — Jonathan Cross has been named to the dean’s list at Huntington University for the spring term 2009. Cross is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in missions. He is a graduate of Lebanon High School and the son of David and Amy Cross, Lebanon. Students named to the dean’s list must be enrolled as a full-time student with a GPA of no less than 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Brown named to dean’s list

Fort Worth, Texas — Having completed spring 2009 classes with at least a 3.4 GPA, Julia Brown of Zionsville was recently named to the dean’s list at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.

Barton, Farrow on dean’s list

Anderson — Anderson University has announced its dean’s list for the spring semester of the 2008-09 academic year. Matthew Ryan Barton, Lebanon, and Jacqueline Nicole Farrow, Jamestown, are among students to be named to the dean’s list. To be on the dean’s list, a student must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Harrison makes dean’s list

Savannah, Ga. — Rachel Michelle Harrison of Lebanon was named to the dean’s list at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., for winter quarter 2008. Full-time students who earn a GPA of no less than 3.5 receive recognition on the dean’s list.

Heck and Wilson on dean’s list

Atlanta, Ga. — Andrew Heck and Carl Wilson, both of Zionsville, have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester 2009 at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Undergraduates earning a 3.0 or higher academic average gain the distinction of being named to the dean’s list.

Knox earns degree

Washington, D.C. — Lana Knox, a native of Jamestown, graduated from American University’s School of Public Affairs, receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in history and a certificate in Women, Policy and Political Leadership. Lana is the daughter of Annette and Lanny Knox. She is a 2005 graduate of Western Boone High School. Knox is a member of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority and was named a 2009 Vital Voices Rising Star.

Burpo named to dean’s list

Franklin — Franklin College has announced its dean’s list for the spring semester. Students named to the dean's list have achieved academic distinction by earning a 3.5 grade point average or above. Included on the list is Elizabeth Claire Burpo, a junior, the daughter of Brad and Pam Burpo of Lebanon.

    Each year before the election, The Lebanon Reporter introduces readers to the candidates in opposed races. Republican candidates in the May 8 primary are vying for their party's nomination for Boone County Council, Auditor and Coroner. Scroll down to see each candidate's education, experience and community activities, as well as a short video interview.

    The candidates were asked these three questions:

    • What do you want voters to know about you?
    • What do you hope to accomplish if elected?
    • What separates you from your opponents?

    Here is a brief description of the duties for each office:

    Auditor:

    • Fiscal officer of the county
    • Keeps accounts and issues warrants for the payment of claims.
    • Responsible for all documents, books, records, maps and papers deposited in the office
    • Provides clerks with estimates of assessed valuations and estimates of taxes
    • Distributes funds collected to appropriate governmental agencies

    Coroner:

    • Determine the manner of death in cases involving violence or casualty, or when someone is found dead in unexplained circumstances
    • Obtain police assistance for investigation
    • Employ a qualified physician to direct the autopsy
    • May act as sheriff if the sheriff is incapacitated or disqualified; has authority to arrest the sheriff when a warrant is issued

    County Council

    • Holds financial powers of the county
    • Sets the county's tax rate
    • Imposes the tax levy
    • Makes appropriations from the county treasury
    • Adopt the annual budget
    • Sets salaries for county employees
