Stars burst past Braves

Indianapolis — Through the first two games of the softball season, one thing is clear about the Western Boone softball team — they can score a lot of runs.

A day after defeating Churubusco 13-11 in the season opener Monday, the Stars beat Brebeuf Jesuit 12-2 Tuesday night in five innings to move their record to 2-0.

“I thought we played pretty well,” Western Boone head coach Todd Clark said. “We hit the ball well after the first couple of innings, because it took us a little while to get used to their pitcher. Once we did we hit the ball pretty well. Their pitcher didn’t have much control, so it was a little rough but we were able to score some runs.”

Trailing 2-1 heading into the second inning, Western Boone took the lead with a 2-run single by Kelsie Mitchell who later scored to make it 4-2.

Western Boone then blew the game open in the third inning. The Stars scored eight runs on five hits while sending 10 girls to the plate.

Courtney Scott led off the inning with a single and stole second base. After Stacey Pearson hit an infield single, both runners stole a base to move into scoring position.

Rachelle Arnold drove in Scott with an fielders’ choice and then Brooke Russell hit another infield single. Pearson scored on a wild pitch and Mitchell singled to put runners on the corners.

Back-to-back wild pitches scored Russell and Mitchell. Sydney Climer, Kelsey Johnson, White and Scott all added runs in the inning to put the 10-run rule in effect.

Brebeuf helped out the Stars by issuing three walks in the inning and throwing three wild pitches.
