Dover — Western Boone Head Coach Brian Hole knew there would be games that his team got into foul trouble because of its full-court press.
Whether he foresaw a game like Friday night’s against Westfield (2-0) is a different question. The Stars and Shamrocks combined for 54 fouls — five players fouled out — and 63 free throws as Westfield defeated Western Boone (1-1) 64-54.
“A little bit,” said Hole when asked if all the fouls disrupted his teams flow. “A few different stretches we had some troubles, but that is going to happen to us this year. We get after it so hard. I feel like we have a deep enough bench so we are not afraid to get after it on either end of the floor. It is going to happen this year. If they (the referees) are going to call it close that is going to happen from time to time.”
Westfield came in with a decided height advantage. The Shamrocks have two starters (Rachel Evans and Jenn Anderson) that are taller than any player on the Stars roster.
Despite that advantage, Western Boone was in the game most of the way, thanks to its defensive tenacity.
“I was really pleased with our effort,” Hole said. “I thought we played our butt of out there against a very quality team. They have very nice post players. I don’t know if we are going to see that again all year. We knew it would be a problem, but I thought our girls got after it defensively. One little stretch, we turned it the ball over and we talked about that. Other than that we just have to fine tune a couple of things.”
