Fifth man tie-breaker gives Eagles second place

Indianapolis — While the team scores were closer than many of the golf sectionals around the state, the No. 16-ranked Zionsville boys squad needed a fifth man tie-breaker to finish second at South Grove Golf Course last Friday just ahead of third place No. 12 Warren Central. Both teams finished with a 297.

No. 4-ranked Brebeuf Jesuit walked away with first place and from the rest of the field, finishing 17 strokes ahead of its closest competition with a 282.

“We call this golf course ‘the great equalizer’ because it brings a lot of teams back into the fold a little bit,” Zionsville coach Steve Simmons said. “There are some teams you might not expect top play well that come here and do well because it is so short. But overall, I am pretty pleased.”

Zionsville’s Graham Singer carded the low score for the Eagles with a 69, two strokes over medalist Wil Pahud of Brebeuf.

“I started off birdie, birdie which is a good way to start,” Singer said smiling. “From then on, I don’t want to say it was easy, but I’d miss it in the right places and kept it in play. I had a good mental game today.”

“Very happy with Singer’s play, “Simmons said. The senior hit 14 greens on the day.

“Graham is a very talented individual,” Simmons said. “He hits the ball long way and when he gets his iron play and putter going he is really hard to beat. That 69 could have been a 65 or 66 pretty easily.”

Tanner Rabb (72), T.J. Pancake (79), Will Dixon (77) and Tommy Briere (85) made up the remaining scores for the advancing Zionsville squad. Briere’s score beat Warren’s fifth man score and solidified the second place finish for Zionsville.
